Chap Goh Mei

This marks the end of the 15-day Lunar New Year celebration also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day.

On this day is where single ladies throw mandarin oranges (that may or may not be marked with their contact details) into the sea in hopes of finding love; and prospective men will be tasked to scoop them up and make contact. So like Tinder but cultured.

This tradition is believed to have been started by the Hokkiens in southern China during the 19th century and became increasingly popular in Malaysia.

Back in the olden days, unmarried young ladies were typically not allowed to go out at night except on this day. On that evening, they would dress in their finest and stroll down the streets accompanied by a chaperone. Of course, the young men wouldn't miss the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the lovely maidens and maybe get to know them.
