In the Chinese Hokkien dialect, Chap Goh Meh’simply means the 15th night of Chinese New Year or the final day of the CNY festivities. Aside from being tagged as the last day, Chap Goh Meh is also known as Chinese Valentine's Day. On a celebratory point of view, this night sees the gathering of family members as they sit down to a meal together.

In Penang (and only in Penang), it is a common sight for single ladies to throw mandarin oranges inscribed with their names and phone numbers into the river. It's been said that if the floating oranges are retrieved, you'll meet your future match soon. Cleverly, prospective suitors have also been known to gather under the bridge to fish for oranges. I hear some have resorted to using melons for a bigger splash.
